Naomi Osaka was born in Osaka Japan in 1997 to Tamaki Osaka and her husband Leonard François who is from Haiti but traveled to Japan as a student.

She and her older sister Mari, who also played professional tennis took her mother’s name while the family was resident in Japan. 

Leonard François was inspired to train his daughters as tennis pros in the style of the Williams sisters, following the methods that Richard Williams had used.

When the family moved to the US in 2000 he pursued their training in earnest, moving the family to Florida and training, and homeschooling them. 

Osaka was professionally coached from the age of 15 by Patrick Tauma at the ISP Academy. She subsequently moved to the ProWorld Tennis Academy before making her professional debut.
